Bike Clinic Review
(Wednesday, 16 January 2008) Written by Joseph Shumaker
KBTC, Last night 7 of us attended Andy Grief's bike clinic at the Community Bicycle Center. We learned some of the basics of inspection, cleaning and tire changing and some of us got into specific problems with our bikes. The time flew by. Wish we had more time. It was well worth the effort and I hope we can continue to grow the relationship between our club and Andy's non-profit. I have already had a follow-up conversation with Andy about doing more stuff together. Andy had a great time and wishes he could do more stuff like this, but he is a one-man show and has limited time. His main focus in doing stuff like this will always be to create stronger community relationships that lead to volunteerism that supports his cause. There are many different opportunities to help him out - from volunteering time for various events to financial donations. With this in mind, we did discuss possible next steps. I suggested that many of us might be interested in taking the lessons to next steps - as well as to bring some new members through the same type of initial clinic. He has a friend who he plans to contact to look for help to offer us even more detailed clinics. He will get back to me. Andy did reiterate that anyone can drop in any weekday between 2-5PM with specific bike issues. He really likes to have adults around the kids. So we will see what happens next... Andy would love to add each of our members to his mailing list, so please check out his website or drop by to learn more about how his program is helping our community. http://www.communitybike.net/ Also... Andy gave us several handouts last night. I hope to get electronic versions of these up online soon. I will provide a link to them asap.
